Langtang, Nepal Health Post Project

GOAL:
The goal of this project has two phases:
Phase 1: Construct and outfit a new Health Post in the village of Langtang, Nepal
Phase 2: Develop a fund for ongoing operations of the Langtang Health Post

THE NEED:
On April  25th  and 26th  and May 12th of 2015, Nepal experienced several earthquakes measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale leaving 10,000 people dead and thousands more homeless. The Langtang Valley, situated north  west of Kathmandu,  was among those villages hit the worst. The village of 700 residents was all but demolished, while 175 residents and 200 tourists lost their lives.

Langtang is a major tourist destination and the livelihood of the village depends on tourism to support its economy. Most homes and other buildings were levelled by subsequent avalanches from the earthquakes, including the Langtang Health Post. As residents are working hard to rebuild their village, they are forced to walk two days to the nearest Health Post.

This project  is focused on the construction of a new Langtang Health Post to accommodate the hundreds of residents and thousands of tourists of the Langtang Valley.

THE PROJECT:
The design of the new Langtang Health Post is very similar to the old one. The layout is simple (see Figure #2), and the materials used, primarily stone and wood, will be resourced mainly  from the region. The total construction budget is at $40,000 for materials and labor to complete Phase 1, construction of the Langtang Health Post. An additional estimated $25,000 will provide  necessary supplies and materials to begin treating patients. Once Phase 1 is complete, the Chhiring Foundation will begin building an operations  fund.

THE MANAGEMENT:
The Chhiring Foundation is acting as the implementing partner and will assume the roles of fundraising, re-construction planning and implementation. The Chhiring Foundation  will work  in cooperation with the local Langtang Valley  agency ‘Nepal Kyajin  Gonpa Society’  to ensure that all funds and resources are transferred directly to the project,  and all work  is implemented as promised. Once complete, supplies and materials will be purchased an delivered  to the post.

PROGRESS:
The Chhiring Foundation is pleased to announce the recent completion of the Langtang Health Post. The residents of the Langtang region of Nepal, as well as trekkers, now have access to health services for the first time since the earthquakes of 2015. This project has proven to be a tremendous start and a great accomplishment for the Chhiring Foundation. Our donors were instrumental in providing the funding that made this possible. We thank everyone who generously contributed to make this work possible.

As of August 2017, the foundation of the building is complete, and the walls have been started (see Figure 4). The wood materials have been collected, and door and window frames started. The project  is expected to be complete sometime in November of 2017.
